A recap of my #GetPublished Twitter Series via @LaraCaseyReps
#GetPublished Do your research and follow the rules. Every publication has a unique system for submissions. I repeat: follow the rules.
#GetPublished Get to know @TwoBrightLights. Brilliant solution to submissions. @EmilyAyer and I love it.
#GetPublished Make sure your brides WANT to be published. You risk making a bride feel like a commodity if you push publication too much.
#GetPublished Epic details trump epic portraits. Nothing is more important to editors. We are in the biz of inspiring new brides.
#GetPublished Photographers, study commercial and food photography to learn how to shoot details. Clean, crisp, clear editorial images.
#GetPublished There are exceptions to every publishing rule and the market is always changing. Get educated. Read the @NYTimes.
#GetPublished Keep emails short. Tell me what I should look for visually in the wedding, highlights. Let the images do the real talking.
#GetPublished Don’t send 400 images on the off-chance that I will like 4. You are the artist. Choose only your BEST work to send.
#GetPublished Art Directors scour blogs for the freshest content. What would an editor think about you looking at your current top posts?
#GetPublished Show only your BEST images in your posts. If you’re not excited about it, no one will be.
#GetPublished I will only publish 20 at the most anyway. RT @JeffNewsom dear everyone, a few blog images have more impact than 500. the end.
#GetPublished Branding is key. If I publish you (aka endorse you), I want to know that your brand = trust, consistency, integrity.
#GetPublished Branding: If I held your site up to the mag you want to be in, does the quality compare? Strive to align in value.
#GetPublished Editors look at it all- do you use proper grammar in posts, poor language on Twitter? Yeah we care. We send our brides to you.
#GetPublished Sometimes getting published is pure timing. Organize select files by color/type. If I need blue cakes asap, you’ll be ready.
#GetPublished Make it easy for editors to get in touch with you. Sounds like simple advice, but so often a feature is lost to this…
#GetPublished Have an email (can’t attach requested images to a form) + phone on your contact page or a separate contact page for press.
#GetPublished Great working relationships with editors are key. Know what they look for and establish consistent trust, friendly dialogue.
#GetPublished On the same token, do not suck up (relax and be genuine) + do not be pushy (one check-in email is enough after a submission).
#GetPublished Personal preference: submissions from the photographer, not a publicist. I want to know YOU, not an impersonal press release.
#GetPublished Do NOT subscribe me to your newsletter. This is spam and really awkward when I unsubscribe because I already read your blog!
#GetPublished Know your target. Study the mag’s content and demographic. Don’t send a 5k wedding to GO or a “no details” to MS.
#GetPublished For editorial shoot pitches, present a detailed creative brief – ie a storyboard clearly outlining the vision.
#GetPublished Take a risk. Send shoot concepts that you are ultra passionate about. Passion breeds brilliance +can spark collaboration.
#GetPublished When you get published, send a thank you note. It’s a huge investment for a magazine to publish you. Build that relationship.
#GetPublished Make sure everyone is on the same page or you risk having the Mother of the Bride submit to the local society mag…
#GetPublished … Martha won’t publish you if you are already in About Town Magazine.
#GetPublished Make sure vendors know who has the right to submit images and your plan for submitting before the wedding day rolls around.
#GetPublished The planner/florist/baker may have a better relationship with an editor than you do. Get to know your vendors and make a plan.
#GetPublished Be aware of exclusivity policies. Most of the time, if it has been featured on a major wedding blog, editors won’t print it.
#GetPublished At the end of the day, getting published doesn’t always = new biz. Your relationship with your client + quality of work does.
New series this week: How to #GetPublished on wedding blogs. Feel free to tweet your burning questions throughout the series.
#GetPublished Rule #1 to getting published on major wedding blogs: read them. Know what they want, style, image format, who they target…
#GetPublished Do the work for the editor and choose the one blog you know the readers would be perfect for, not based on traffic…
#GetPublished A la @SethGodin’s Tribes, aim for a loyal specific audience as opposed to a sea of readers. Quality vs Quantity.
#GetPublished Most of the same rules as print apply to online. Get to know the editors, submit fresh exclusive content, refine your brand.
#GetPublished Blog editors are naturally immersed in social media. Interact with them on Twitter etc to build a connection.
#GetPublished A few of the many blog editors to follow on Twitter: @emilyayer @brooklynbride @stylemepretty @100_layercake @snippetandink…
#GetPublished …@junebugweddings @oncewed @ritzybee @amiatEAD @grnweddingshoes …check my new lists for more –>
#GetPublished Make my job easy. Best submission story: product submission came to my inbox with images already sized…
#GetPublished … text already formatted how we format, well-written short blurb. Feature went up that day: http://bit.ly/cx8MVs
#GetPublished Blog editors scour blogs for the freshest content. Simple enough… blog your work.
#GetPublished BUT if you have a wed that a specific blog would adore, hold off on blogging it. Submit 1st. Bloggers love exclusive content.
#GetPublished Link other vendor credits wherever possible in blog posts. Having a @SylviaWeinstock cake credited peaks my interest.
#GetPublished Warning #2 about exclusivity policies: know them. If it’s featured on one blog, other blogs generally won’t publish it.
#GetPublished When introducing yourself, don’t send just a general portfolio. Send specific images you think I’d love. I’ll remember you.
RT @AmandaMcMahon: Send high or low res. and with logo? -Big enough so images look great stretched across the width of that blog, no logo.
#GetPublished In general, editors prefer real-life color in images. Just like print- clean, editorial processing makes for better visuals.
#GetPublished Make sure your brides WANT to be published. Many times we have a feature done, bride won’t do an interview. Feature lost.
#GetPublished Not everything is blog-worthy. You are in charge of your brand’s quality control. Don’t submit EVERY wedding you do. Period.
#GetPublished Learn what blogs want by becoming an active member of their community. Comment on posts. We’ll get to know you too.
#GetPublished Don’t spam and leave a full email signature in blog comments. Commenting isn’t an ad for you, it’s a conversation.
#GetPublished Submit to one blog at a time. Nothing more frustrating than accepting a submission only to find it’s been spoken for.
#GetPublished Once you submit, wait a week or so. Editors inboxes are packed! After, send one email to say you are submitting elsewhere.
#GetPublished Be kind and courteous in your communication. Remember that we both need each other and we love working with nice people.
#GetPublished Check FAQ pages before asking a question. Blogs are email-based businesses and bloggers love when you’ve done your research.
#GetPublished A personalized sample is powerful. Calligraphers/paper designers, send a stationery set that we will USE and remember you by.
#GetPublished I recycle all mailed press releases, packets, brochures. I won’t throw away hand-written notes or personalized submissions.
#GetPublished Bribery doesn’t work. OK, unless it’s Luna Bars for me, chocolate for @EmilyAyer, or candy for @Katharine_W. Kidding. Sort of.
#GetPublished Be relevant. Don’t send me Christmas weddings in July. Time submissions based on season and current events.
#GetPublished Don’t spam editors on facebook/twitter with links to weddings or pushing a product over and over. If I like it, you’ll know.
#GetPublished On the same token, gentle persistence pays off. I repeat: GENTLE. The more we communicate, the more we’ll remember you.
#GetPublished If you genuinely get to know me, you’ll know exactly what I want in images. Think of editors as clients. Build a relationship.
#GetPublished New series on branding starts Monday! It’s going to be killer. Follow along: #GetBranded
#GetPublished In light of my recent request http://bit.ly/9c0fBi today I’ll be sharing tips on how to shoot a COVER!
#GetPublished Covers: remember the composition of a cover and leave room at the top for the mag title, room on sides for text.
#GetPublished Covers: a cover has to pop from 50 feet away. Study your newsstand and notice what jumps out at you from a distance.
#GetPublished Covers: I like the model facing the camera, happy, alluring, and not too “model-y”. I want “relatable and stunning”.
#GetPublished Covers: yet again, study great commercial photography. A cover is a giant ad that tells the story of an entire brand.
#GetPublished Covers: think of the covers you remember. Were they very high fashion, high emotion, or highly styled and happy?
#GetPublished Covers: a great cover doesn’t happen by accident. Have a very clear vision, styling and a team of pros.
#GetPublished Want to shoot the @iloveswmag cover? http://bit.ly/9c0fBi The #GetBranded series starts on Monday! Happy weekend!
