MAKING THINGS HAPPEN 2013 CONFERENCE

If you had asked me back in 2009 where I would be in five years, I would have NEVER guessed it would be here. As I start this post, it’s a little surreal thinking about how much has changed in my life. Wow. God is good and He made far more happen than I ever thought possible. Five years ago, I got an email from a planner, asking me “How do you make things happen?” and I never knew that my public answer to her question would change my life forever. The Making Things Happen Intensive was born.

People ask me all the time if we can do an online version of Making Things Happen. It’s like picking out a wedding dress from a catalog. You could do it, but there is nothing like feeling the magic of slipping into that gown in person. OK, for the guys (or gals, too!) out there… it’s like fantasy football. Awesome, but not at all the same as being there on the sidelines. You can’t phone Making Things Happen in. You have to sit in the seat and look in the eyes of the person next to you. You have to take a risk and be present. You have to sit in the seat to really harness the change you want in your life. Quite simply, you have to show up. As you are. Fears and all. Everyone else is in the exact same boat. We tell people to come in comfy clothes. No heels. Leave the decked-out duds at home. MTH is a place to come and just be yourself. It’s the greatest feeling to just let go with people that get you.

Emily, Gina and I have been praying and talking about what’s next for Making Things Happen for a couple years now and we have some big plans up our sleeves. We kept asking ourselves, “How do we help more people make what matters happen? How do we give as much as possible and make a lasting impact? How do we truly help people change their lives and businesses?” The answer fell into our laps. We’re grateful to announce what’s next for MTH… the next level…

The 2013 Making Things Happen Conference is the first of it’s kind – combining the Making Things Happen workshop on Day 1 with business and branding essentials from Making Brands Happen on Day 2. Seats are very limited. This two-day conference is designed to fire you up and get you on a powerful path to making big things happen in life and in business. This is the fourth year of this nationally-acclaimed SOLD OUT workshop and we are so thrilled to combine it with powerful knowledge from Making Brands Happen! Together, we’ll dig deep, establish priorities, set goals and discover how to make what matters happen. After uncovering a decisive and clear vision for what you want to make happen on Day 1, we’ll dive into the core principles of powerful personal branding on Day 2 to really help you make what matters MOST happen.

Just a few of the topics covered: conquering fear, discovering your strengths, eliminating distractions, making bold leaps in life and in turn in business, how your environment and the people around you affect you, living your ideal day, branding, client experience, authenticity and action. Making Things Happen was founded on the idea that you have the choice to change your life.

ABOUT MTH: In November 2009, I took a seemingly small but gigantic risk that would change the course of my life and thousands of others. I wrote a blog post in response to an email that asked the question, “How do you make things happen?” That blog post started a revolution, and just 30 days later had me touring the US on a sold out 13-city tour (where I met MTH alum Emily Ley and Gina Zeidler) to teach people the principles I used to make big things happen. The new Making Things Happen Conference is designed to fire people up to make bold decisions towards their best lives and empower them to step into their fears instead of away from them. Attendees are asked vital (i.e. hard) questions and must be ready to lay it all out on the table. This principles behind MTH are simple. Get to the core of who you are and what makes you come alive… then act on your core. Rid yourself of the distractions and fears that hold you back by stepping boldly into your new path. MTH is not for the faint of heart, but for people from all walks of life who really want to change, grow, and harness their full potential. Life is too short to play small.

Almost five years since it began and over 700+ alum later, MTH has truly become a national movement. Community and accountability are key to success and MTH harnesses both through powerful online interaction. The MTH alum have made phenomenal things happen (from national acclaim to life balance to new businesses to making creative passions their full time jobs!) since attending and becoming a part of one of the most supportive and encouraging collaborative communities out there!

MARCH 13 + 14: Spend two packed days with Emily Ley and Gina Zeidler and I (and some special guests!) to make a clear, active, successful plan for your future. This is not for people who want a quick fix. This is for creatives who want a true life change and who want to harness their full potential. Life is too short to play small. A year from now, you will wish you had started today. – Karen Lamb So, get ready to make BIG things happen with us!

Chapel Hill is the only city we are visiting this year. We chose Chapel Hill so that those who are travelling in from all over the world (the majority of attendees travel in) could easily join us. Travel is very easy to RDU and we have a great group room block at the Carolina Inn. Get ready for a jam-packed 48 hours! REGISTER HERE

The MTH Scholarship: There are TWO scholarships available for the 2013 Conference and you are welcome to apply for both!

Ways to win Scholarship 1: Leave a comment here telling us what you want to make happen AND spread the word! Tell your friends about Making Things Happen, too! Tweet, Facebook, Blog, Pin this, send smoke signals… whatever you want to do to tell people about Making Things Happen and just link to this post. Leave a separate comment here telling us you did so. We will pick a random winner for this scholarship, so the more entries you submit, the better!

Ways to win Scholarship 2: Instagram the following phrase “I want to make _____ happen in 2013” and tag #MTH2013 and @MTH_2013. Fill in your reason and get creative! You can post as many times as you like (some of you have a lot you want to make happen!), using that phrase in your photo or just in the text that goes with your photo. Be sure to come back here and leave a comment with the link to your photo.

Deadline: You have until midnight on Monday, February 11 to apply. However, it is very possible we will sell out before then, so register now if you want to reserve your seat!

I want to go to sleep at night with a smile on my face and wake up with one, content that I can on my own, provide for the gift of my son which God gave me and enjoy sharing the talent I have worked so hard to harness for goodness in other people’s lives. I want balance, I want peace of mind and I need an extra fire lit underneath my soul. I believe that this workshop could not be at a better more needed time for me in my life and I already believe and have started the process of inner change and my heart is ready for help. Amen.

I WISH I was able to come home (which is Cary, NC – UNC alum too!) to attend this conference – I’ve been so inspired by your posts and am working on Making Things Happen for me this year! Alas, I now live in California and the cross-country flight is not something I can do right now. Hope everyone who is able has an amazing time! I’ll be over here vicariously learning through blog posts 🙂

I’ve posted this on Twitter, I’ve posted on Instagram it and on Facebook. I have posted on Instagram that I want to make success happen in 2013 but it’s more than that. It’s about finding my path, finding a balance between my personal life and my business, being a good person, a good wife, a good friend, a good partner and a good photographer. It’s about waking up everyday and feeling happy and blessed with my life. 🙂

I started a business two years ago and, for two years, I’ve been afraid to succeed and to put myself and my business out there. I want to start 2013 out with the confidence and trust in myself and my business that I know I, and my family, deserve.

  20. Terrilynn on January 23, 2013 at 1:34 pm

I want to make sure that God’s Will for my life happens. I want to move forward boldly after God made all of my prayers happen regarding peace, clear direction, courage, service and my passions. I started the goal setting process with you over the holidays and it really put a lot of things in perspective. I know now that it was a set-up for what’s to come in 2013! Goal setting was the tip of the iceberg. I can’t seize it if I don’t see it! With God’s help I can see clearly now and I want to finally make MY LIFE happen!!

I want to win a scholarship to Making Things Happen because I want to change the direction of my life. Not that there is anything wrong with my life, I just want a little more to it. I am a Stay at Home Momma/Wife to the most loving and supportive husband and most adorable little boy and girl. I am so happy with my life but feel that I need to have goals to work towards everyday when I wake up. I want to challenge myself this year. Not just with the normal New Year’s Resolutions like finally getting off the baby weight, paying down this or that and being a better person. I am truly happy with where I have come with those types goals in my life. I am not quite 30 and have a husband, children and a college degree. Now that my children are out of the infant stage I want to run a online boutique out of my home of home decor pieces and little planners/notepads; all the things to add a finishing touch to your home/office/life as well as dipping my toe into graphic design. I started it in college and then went another path and now want to find that path again. I find pleasure giving to others what truly lights up their life and inspires them. Helping them feel prettier, helping them organize better and just giving them a great way to start their day. I do have a business degree but I haven’t used it for a couple of years and want a refresher.
I want to be with my children during the day. I want to know that if they are sick, I do not have to call someone to say I am not going in. I just want to sit there with my littles. I want to have things to work towards. I want to share the financial responsibility with my husband. He gives us a fantastic life of everything we need, but sometimes it would be nice to have a few extra dollars to put away for a rainy day, buying something for my dears without worry and taking family vacations every now and then to make lasting memories for them.
Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, professionals built the Titanic.
    Unknown
I am an amateur for starting a business, but I want to get the inspiration that Making Things Happen can only give. I hope I win the scholarship to spend 2 days with 3 amazing and inspiring ladies.

I want to take my life and business to the next level. I have seen rapid growth in my business in the past year, but there is so much that I want to accomplish and I just feel like I don’t “know how”. God has been testing my faith in a lot of areas of my life for the past 3 years and I just don’t feel like I can get over the hump (in life and business). I know that He has so much more in store for me. I just want to be able to dig below the surface and claim all the blessings that He has for me if I will just move myself (and my pride) out of His way. Fear of failure and fear of the unknown, I feel, are holding me back from experiencing life as God intends me too. I want to stop being such a chronic worrier and I want to experience all that God has for my life, my family, & my business because I know it is something amazing. I feel like MTH is the perfect place to experience this! So excited!!! xoxo- Stacy (Preppy & Pink)

I want to attend Making Things Happen because I am at a turning point in my life. I will graduate from Texas A&M University in May and am unsure of the next step, but I do know that I am in a place where I am dangerously at risk of falling into the mold as far as how I pursue a career. I know that I have big dreams but am letting the fear of failure and criticism from others make me think they aren’t worth pursuing. Everything I read about the incredible ladies of MTH makes me think that I can follow my heart and pursue career dreams alongside my bigger dream of a loving family. I think I might bawl my eyes out if picked for this scholarship… My newlywed (4 weeks on Saturday!) self would love to attend but I sure do know we can’t fit this in our new budget!

I am not even joking, I honestly believe where there is a will there is a way. I have a lot of will and this scholarship is my way. I am going to make this happen. At the very least, I will def help you with some pr cause I just put this up on my twitter and instagram yo. I am a good time and will do a song and dance for the entire conference if I get randomly picked for this scholarship.

I want to make my business, and ultimately my passion, happen in 2013, in a very real, powerful way. I want to become an ambassador for marriage, helping couples prepare for marriage while planning a meaningful, beautiful wedding. And I want to spread the word on the importance of marriage preparation, and the beauty of marriage as a whole, however messy and difficult it may be. I’m motivated to do it but I would love, and honestly need, accountability, a great group of cheerleaders, and an event like this to kick it all into gear.

I want to make my business happen. I have a lot of goals that I’ve written down and I’m working on clearing the clutter for my small business, Amanda Speer Creative. God has so richly blessed me in being able to start this business 3 months ago and I want to use it and my talents to His glory. This scholarship to the conference would be an awesome way to take it to the next level!

I’m so excited about a scholarship opportunity I could spit! I have NEVER been more ready to Make Things Happen than I am now. I’m currently taking the Powerful Brands webinars and implementing items in my personal and business life but really ready to take it one step further and push it all into action. I have dreamed of going to a Making Things Happen workshop and since this is the only opportunity this year I’m be tickled to win a scholoarship to attend. I’ve definitely confronted my fears head on – leaving a corporate job with lots of potential after 10 years to move across the country (FL to Oregon) to really start living my passion. I’m currently a wedding planner and my husband and I recently started an event rental business on top of the planning business. I’ve come this far and I’m ready to move it to the next level. My word for 2013 is MOMENTUM! I want to continue the momentum we’ve started and find out our full potential for what’s next. I could really benefit from the support of such amazing, supportive, strong women like yourself and the workshop attendees. So…bring it on 2013…I’m ready for you. I’m so willing to invest in the travel across country from Oregon to NC and all my travel expenses if I could just manage to win this scholarship. Thank you for doing what you do…I hope I’ll get to see you in Chapel Hill!

I want to immerse myself completely in every intention of my day to day.
To deepen my love for the work I do.
To put more effort in what matters in our business and life.
To believe the encouragement I give others is also true for myself.
To take what I learn and consistently ACT! <—BIG ONE!
I basically just want to kick up my life a couple of notches.

Hi Lara! I would love nothing more than to attend the Making Things Happen conference. I’ve talked to Emily about it (she’s awesome!), and as I told her I want to make LIFE happen. I graduated from college almost two years ago, and I’ve made strides in some areas, but I want to make strides in others. I want to narrow my scope and discover my true passions (not the 15 things I “like”), and I want to develop those passions into a career. I need direction. I have goals, but fear and failure stop me. That needs to change. I’m ready to roll, and this scholarship would help in so, SO many different ways. Thank you for posting this!

In 2013, I’d love to continue to make things happen. God did a wonderful thing when he helped me travel to Atlanta in October and he has continued to bless me each day. I’d love to just continue the journey by attending MTH 2-day conference. You ladies changed my life and I can only imagine what attending again could do. My head and heart are in an entirely different (better) place and I think this could really impact my year and my business. Love you guys!

I actually live in Chapel Hill, and MTH is the second weekend of Spring Break, so I don’t think I can “lurk” any longer! In 2013, I want to make BALANCE happen! I’m a second year in UNC’s MD/PhD program, and I’m tired of living exam to exam and deadline to deadline, tired of saying “I’ll do _____ when I have time.” It’s so easy for academic medicine and science to consume your life, so I want to develop good habits now before I have a demanding – yet rewarding – career and other blessings (hopefully a family one day) to whom to devote my time. Crossing my fingers that I’ll see you in March!

  65. Lauren Jolly on January 25, 2013 at 5:25 pm

In 2013, I want to make balance happen. I am a new business owner and in October, I’ll be a new wife. These next 8 months, I want to create discipline and ignore excuses! I want to make sure that Vaughan (the future hubs!) and I are on the same page and are working together. I want to integrate good habits into my business and my life and learn to be consistent. I’m not particularly busy right now but that’s even better: I get the chance to practice office hours, etc. before it’s extremely necessary. Hopefully the habits will continue if I do get busy in the future (fingers crossed!). I would love to attend this workshop, not only to learn good habits, but to meet a community of people who are on the same page and who keep each other accountable. I’ll be dreaming of the Making Things Happen workshop from now until the scholarship winner is announced! Thanks so much for this opportunity!!

I am currently trying to figure out what I can do to earn an income from home. I feel like the Lord is leading me to become a life coach to help twenty-somethings figure out life. But, I don’t always know how to get there and I often get so overwhelmed that I freeze, therefore I stop moving forward. I think this conference would be the push I need to actually make this thing happen.

MTH was LIFE CHANGING for me, and I’d LOVE to come again, but I know someone who would really benefit from this experience so can I enter for her?! She’s like me, and I think this would be a push in the right direction for her, and I know she’d benefit from it A LOT. I’m hoping to make a temporary move to Charlotte from March-May and I’d drive her to Chapel Hill myself 😀 (she’s in Louisiana)

    love to you Lara!!

I am making things happen every single day, so maybe in a strange way I am already reaping the benefits of just knowing that people like you Lara and your friend Emily are out there, and really exist. I shared my joy and positive outlook on the future along with my faith in a higher power with a client today and that, may have changed her life. I want to be at this conference to share and to be shared with. I met you dancing in Vegas a couple years ago, and who would have thought that for some reason I have followed you and your life ever since, cause you seemed like so much fun! So even if I don’t get picked, just wanted to say thankyou, cause you have already inspired and changed my life by knowing you exist. True story.

In 2013, I want to make myself happen. It sounds silly, I know, but I often feel like I am so close to that standard of grace (not perfection) but still so far away. I need to learn to forgive myself for the things I failed to do and move forward to create the best me possible. I want to expand my photography business, get my life in order, and really become accountable for who I am and where I am going.

In 2013 I want to make this conference happen. Hello, scholarship! I’ve been battling fears and lies for so long. Jesus has been speaking beautiful truth into my life over the past couple years and I feel like I’m ready to move on from just surviving to thrive. I see this as being a helpful next step in discovering pieces of my true identity that God has given me. I feel like there are some big things yet to come, it’s like the feeling of having something just on the tip of your tongue but not being able to quite express it. I’m ready to speak whatever it is out loud with joy!

Now I have to win this scholarship, because the story I am going to tell at this conference I give myself goosebumps just thinking about it. I want to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN this year. I’ve watched countless professionals and peers go through this transformation of Making Things Happen and it has been on my heart for so long. This year I have found my soul in this place of numbness. I don’t think I’m living life to my greatest potential and I want to find that. I want to bring more joy and vibrancy into my photography business. I want to bring pure and endless joy and love into my marriage. I want to live endlessly through my faith. I want to believe in myself again. I am so overcome by fear, worries and burdens, that I need to identify these and set myself free. I need to find that place of vulnerability to let me be myself again. I am so inspired by the genuine spirits and honest words that come from Emily, Lara and Gina. I read each of your blogs, follow your instagrams, and most of them bring me to tears. Because even through the struggles, you are finding hope in Him. I want to go to Making Things Happen to find that transformation within myself. To focus on Him through everything and make a completely radical change in my life and my business.

I want to win this scholarship simply because I want to gain and absorb knowledge from true professionals and powerful women who inspire me daily! I have dreams of owning my own business one day…which WILL happen! My mind is constantly creating and coming up with new ideas, designs, etc. I know that things can’t happen right away like we all want them to, but that doesn’t mean you should give up. I will never give up…I am quite stubborn and driven lol:) One of the most important things I’ve taught myself was to let go and let God take care of the rest. Patience is key. As long as I’m making steps to achieve my ultimate goal, it is possible and it WILL happen. To win this scholarship would be a cherry topper!

Thank you for inspiring me ya’ll!

MTH conference would the ultimate blessing for my business I feel. I was blessed to be able to meet Amber Housley at the Dreamers into Doers Conference in March of 2012. I remember she was an absolute doll and really sparked something different for me. When I returned from the conference knowing where I thought I was destined to go, I started studying the ways of the people I admire. Amber is how I was introduced to MTH and the whole AMAZING team! I basically stumbled upon it from some social source from Amber. I really, truly admire the passion, truth, dedication and honesty that the ladies truly magnify. It’s really a blessing to know and learn from a talented group like this who share a lot of the same values, beliefs and dreams that I dream for my business. I started my business in 2008, and I didn’t know what I was doing, it was more like a hobby for me. It has been almost 2 years that I realized my happiness truly lies in being artistic and creative. I am tired of working my part time day job and coming home to work on my business part-time after tucking my little ones in, working until 1 am every night. I know there is that burning passion inside of me for so long, that I want to ignite it. I am feeling defeated knowing what I want for my business and the dreams I imagine but hitting road blocks and a lack of resources and money. I want my business to make a difference and touch lives every day. I want to create paper products with meaning and a collection that can reach out to those in need. I don’t want to be the best of the best, but truly enjoy and be happy and content with everything. I want to be able to branch over into the wedding industry and feel confident that I know what I am doing, or having the right resources to find the answer. I want to work with inspiring people and businesses that continue to set the bar high and push me deeper every day. I want to wake up every day with that burning desire and promise of a better tomorrow that I read on Lara’s, Emily’s and Amber’s blog’s weekly. They are so inspiring and uplifting to me, my business and my journey. I believe God is paving a way for me and has a plan for me to MTH in 2013. I would love to be apart of this AMAZING opportunity 🙂

I’ve been struggling this year (and the few years previous) to build my business. I’ve discovered I’m really good at excuses-too tired, kids don’t allow me time, no resources, etc etc… I want my stationery and design business to not only help provide for my family but fulfill my creative passions. Lara and Emily’s blogs have been such motivation this year for me – business and personal – and I know this is just another kick in the pants I need!

  136. Megan Good on February 5, 2013 at 1:56 pm

My goal in 2013 is to figure out how I can do what I love full time and take action! In an ideal world, I would be decorating weddings and events full time and blogging about how brides on a budget can achieve a DIY wedding of their dreams. As a first baby step, I launched a blog and an Etsy site selling wedding and party decor – which is a small, manageable way to do what I love while maintaining a full time job. I need help figuring out how to get from where I am now to where I want to be and I think MTH2013 could help me get there!

My first thought for this entry was that I want to make my business happen in 2013. But the more I think, the more my answer is (or at least I want my answer to be) that I want to follow God & HIs plan for me in 2013. I want to make my FAITH happen in 2013. Real, dirty, true faith. No more doubts or worries. Just fully trusting in Him. And I do feel led to grow this business. But I want it to be for HIM and not for ME. I don’t want 2013 to be about me. I want it to be about Him. So there is my answer; sending up a prayer with this comment.

I am so overwhelmed and burnt out. I am exhausted in every part of my being and would love to reassess and learn how to accomplish the things that are on my heart and speak to my soul, but seem so unattainable. Right now any frustration or obstacle stops me and I run away in fear. Life is about obstacles, I’m so ready to learn to face them when they happen instead of continuing to pretend as if I prepare enough they won’t happen. 2013 is my year to Make Things Happen!

I want to make inspiration happen! After 10 years in the industry, eight years as a business owner, and four years of motherhood, I have hit a rut. When I came to Texas in 2006 I made it my goal to introduce the idea of green weddings to my colleagues and make them receptive. Goal accomplished, but what happens after you’ve hit all of your big goals? Somewhere along the way I have hit a wall and lost my push, my drive, my inspiration. I want to attend MTH2013 because I want to get FIRED UP! I’m ready to take my business out of it’s holding pattern, and go to the next level.

i go to sleep at night with so many ideas of what I want my life to look like, the direction I think I’m being led in and the means to get to those end results. I love to create. However, I feel a pressure that there’s so much that I still dont know. This is a road I’ve never been down before. Which way do I turn? Which aspect of starting my own brand for centralizing all of ideas that keep me up at night is the most important. Where do you even start? I want that direction through modeling of others that have done this on their own before. I want to create and appreciate what others have created. I want to learn how to prioritize, build an audience and over organize to really feel like I have the ability to lead my life down the path and to match the drive and passion that I already feel so strongly. I know that I can Make Things Happen in 2013, I just would love the chance to prove it.

And yet, we only have a general idea of where we will be, but the freedom to make that call at the right time. While it’s scary it is also exhilarating and liberating after going through a long and difficult period as a new family; my husband calls our move the “Big Reset Button of Our Lives.” Ha! That being said, 2013 is bound to be a big year for our family, and I want nothing more than to be a side-by-side contributor to achieving our dreams with my husband. I want to be a role model for our two baby girls… I want them to grow up with a mom and dad who have worked hard toward not only a better life because we are thriving doing what we love, but a family with a solid foundation in Jesus. I’m great at coming up with big ideas but terrible at implementing them. I’m a “show me” kind of person; give me a map and I’m golden. When I heard about your workshop I wanted so badly to go when you were in Arizona in October but we couldn’t afford it. I know this is just what I need to guide me, motivate me, and inspire me to keep on keepin’ on and MAKE the life I’ve always wanted a reality now that I have a wonderful husband and two baby girls to live it out with!

I want to also accomplish what so many of us want- the ability to be successful doing what we are passionate about. Its been a couple of years that my business partner and I have been slowly building a client base for branding and event styling but I feel like we need that extra little push that will set us off to go full blown with our business. We’ve been following you ladies and admire you ability to get things accomplished- I hope to get the chance to experience the valuable information I’m sure you will be providing in this conference.*fingers crossed*

In 2013 I want to take the next step. Up to this point my business has been a whirlwind. A frantic combo of doing what my creative self is telling me to do and the practical self telling me to do what I have to in order to help support my family. I have been blessed in that my business has grown to the point that I personally can’t take on more without help, but there is something creatively missing that is leaving a void within me. While my business is an absolute necessity to the running of my household, I am searching for the direction that God wishes for me to take it in order to feel complete within myself.
I want to find the authentic me.
I want to step outside of what is comfortable and embrace all the God had prepared for me and this business.
I want to stop treading water and start soaring.
I want to stop doubting and start believing.
I want to take discover and take my business and myself to the next step.

    @MTH2013
    Lara, Emily, & Gina
I stumbled across the Making Things Happen webpage back in 2012, as a new mom, young wife, and full-time college student I need some major motivation to Make Things Happen that mattered most to me. I was upset that I missed attending the conferences then and when I found about the two-day conferences in Chapel Hill, NC. I was so excited because I know I personally need this for myself. I have been praying that God will open up doors for me to help me overcome the still battle of depression I have of loosing my mom 4 years ago. He first answered my prayers by allowing me to be accepted into a nursing program close to our home and providing child-care for our 16 month old daughter. My prayer has now been that God will give me the motivation to go through all of my mother’s things and to help me overcome the anxiety and sometimes depression I get raising my own family in the house I once shared with my mother.
When I described the Making Things Happen Challenge to my husband, he looked at me a bit confused saying “Dear your a nursing student, isn’t this conference more for people with there own businesses,” I politely explained for him that it is more then a conference for women making their dreams of owning their own business happen. Its about women truly realizing what is the most important in their lives, what fears of life and to realize what things are holding them back from reaching their goals and dreams in life. I told him how I felt God had put going to this conference on my heart and how badly I felt I needed to go for my personal reason, to help break the barriers so that I can start Making Things Happen so that I can be the best Wife, Mother & for now Nursing Student I can be.
My husband then became excited for me and asking more details about the conference. When I went to look up the details to register for the conference, I realized that realistic my husband and I could not pay for me to attend the conference. I pray that if God’s desire is for me to attend this conference and to be challenged by you three women that I will be selected for one of the scholarships. If this is not my year, I pray that you Ladies have a wonderful conference and continue to help inspire women as you have helped to inspire me. I hopefully will be able to catch your next conference!

I now know and can clearly see that I am one of those people who are “meant for more”. I’m not sure what on earth is going on but I just think I am suppose to be at this conference and because of the other side of my crazy story which I will tell you when I see you, I just need this scholarship.
Matthew 17:20 is my guiding light right now, I’m sure you might not even have to look this one up. In any case, I am making things happen everyday, one step at a time and I’m using part of the energy you and your beautiful friends are putting out there-thank you.

I want 2013 to be the year I finally quit thinking about it and actually MAKE THINGS HAPPEN. I am desperate to find balance in my life. I am a graphic designer that loves her in house design job but feels like she is missing so much with her kids. I am terrified to leave to leave the stability that I know. I put off doing things to make change because I am overwhelmed with how to start and so afraid of failure.

In 2013, there are some very exciting things that will happen – my family and I will move into our very own home and welcome our third baby.
I want to do this with grace, intentionality, and sober-mindedness.
I want to let my photography business simmer for a little bit while I focus on my family.
I want to be still so I can hear God’s whispers.
I want to start a personal blog that reflects the realness of life and passions of my heart in order to share my journey with and encourage other women across the country.
I want to help bring Jesus and clean water to the people of Toloha, Tanzania and encourage others to join in the Toloha Partnership through social media and fund-raising campaigns.
I want to set up processes and habits in my home so my family does not get bogged down by details, but can focus on what matters.
    I want to really live.
Thank you to you, Lara, for helping reveal this vision for 2013 more clearly with your goal setting steps – loved those posts!

    Dear Lara, Emily, and Gina-

Wow- where to begin?! The chance to attend Making Things Happen would be one step closer to making my dreams come true and learning how to implement successful steps to living my dream life, one that is full of personal fulfillment, professional development, and love for others. As I have grappled with which career path to choose, I am now realizing that it’s not the “career” that should define me. Instead, I am learning that I {yes, me!} have the ability to choose whatever career I want, and that I just have to MAKE IT HAPPEN! Why choose a job solely to have a job? Instead, I need to figure out what makes ME happy. What makes ME want to get out of bed each morning and make the day great? How can I live the life that I am destined to live? I’m ready to take the leap and figure out my life!

I want to make clear and decisive goals to use as I make 2013 the best year yet. I want to envision a plan for the next several years, to make things happen, be the best person I can be, and in turn, inspire others to do what they love and make positive changes to be their own best person. I want to live the best life I can, and I believe, if given the chance to attend the MTH conference, that I will be inspired, empowered, and validated, that I truly will be able to be successful in all areas of life. Instead of keeping all of my ideas inside my head, I want to actually take risks and implement them. Nothing good comes out of living a “safe” life. I want to change this and take risks, meet new people, improve myself, and most importantly, live my life the way I want to.

Presented with the opportunity to be an MTH conference attendee, I 333% {3 is my lucky number} guarantee that you will not be disappointed in choosing me. I am your biggest fan and supporter for taking the courage to change your life and live each day full of grace, positivity, and humility. I am truly inspired by all you have accomplished, and would feel absolutely honored to learn and growth my strengths and capabilities for my life alongside you, the other speakers, and conference attendees. My enthusiasm and passion for living my best life will not stop on March 14 after the conference is over. I am motivated to make 2013 MY year. MY year for success, MY year for greatness, MY year to live happily each day, and MY year to start doing what I love. Attending the MTH conference would not only be a blessing, but one piece of the puzzle to making 2013 the best year ever!

For 2013 I want my vision that I wrote earlier this year to happen…”Grow. Grow in my knowledge of the Bible, grow in my prayer life, and in serving God. I desire for my days to be filled with gratitude, joy, and purpose. I will prayerfully make decisions- letting God be in control. I want my life to be filled with less clutter, healthier in body and spirit, and focused on the end goal- glorifying God’s kingdom. I desire to be living fully in the present and focused on those that I love. May my list of ‘what fires me up’ be used daily to live a year of growth in all aspects of my life!” I truly want to grow and with growth comes change, growing pains, sunshine and rain, but I am ready to live this vision. The MTH conference I know would plant so many seeds and water those that I have growing. It would be a blessing to attend.

Wow, I almost didn’t do this – I’ve actually gotten a phone call from Lara with the news that I had won a scholarship and then I couldn’t go – I cannot TELL you how much regret fills my heart. Why? Because I wasn’t in your space, the space that always fills me.
Since the time that I entered last time, a sweet little angel graced my life and I realized that I couldn’t go back to work when she was 6 weeks old – I couldn’t EVER go to a job that I couldn’t hear her laughter or see her smiles. Everything has changed for me – for the better. Currently, I work from home as a full time photographer (wife, mother, entrepreneur), praying, hustling, and making things happen – when I’m not, I’m reading my bible (I cling to it these days), cleaning, and of course playing with sweet Kenley.

What do I want to make happen this year (and for the rest of my life?) I want to bring God’s amazing calling in my life to fruition – I want to wake up fully filled in Him and not in the Instagram or Facebook feeds that haunt me. I want to play with Kenley and be in the moment with my family…ALWAYS. I want to capture moments with families that will never return. I want to be an encourager of others. I have ABSOLUTELY no idea how God wants me to encourage others, but I have to. I have to make that happen. I have to work towards helping others fulfill their calling. That desire keeps me up at night – I don’t know how I’ll do it, but God willing, it’ll be in your space!

Thank you so much for your consideration again,
    xxoo,
    Lida Mathews

What an amazing opportunity! I choose MAKE as my one little word for 2013 and the opportunity to attend this conference and really focus on MAKING THINGS HAPPEN would be a true blessing. I want to make ME matter this year. I’ve spent the last several years focused on putting everyone else in my life first and not pursuing my passions or dreams and even losing sight of what those even are. I want to put my feet on the path of success, discover how to embrace my dreams and conquer the fear of failing. I want to make things happen for me this year, but I also want to use this year as an opportunity to show my children how important it is to make their own success in life, to not wait for good things to come their way but to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN. I would be honored to receive this scholarship and attend this event, fingers crossed! 🙂

I have been struggling to put into words the reasons I feel I should attend MTH. I’ve had to put my dreams on hold twice because of the crazy military life and each time it has eaten away a little bit of my confidence. I am filled with a fire to DO and I’m ready to break free from the new girl in town fear and just make.it.happen. I am worthy. I think that my dreams might be a little different than many people that follow you, but oh how I think something like this could be so valuable and impact so many people. I run an in home child care business. In my former life I was a social worker, but as my oldest was approaching kindergarten I knew I needed to make some changes as I felt like I was missing out on my kids whole lives. I’ve been doing this for 5 years now and have become absolutely PASSIONATE about early childhood education. I have taken so much training and have made so many positive improvements. I am so proud of everything I’ve done. But sometimes I get so tired and overwhelmed and just am not sure what else I have to give. There are elements I want to add to my program: emergent curriculum being the most important, I have financial goals I need to meet so I can focus less energy on those worries and do more good and I want to become a voice for change in early childhood education. It’s such a neglected area by many people, but it’s literally the most important thing we put our energy into. It’s cliche to say that “the children are our future”, but it’s so true and I don’t take this responsibility lightly. I can be an influence for good for my little group of kiddos that I care for, but I truly believe I could do more and be an amazing influence for good. I would love the opportunity to attend. Thanks for the scholarship opportunity. Here’s hoping 🙂

    Hello Lara, Emily and Gina,

First of all, thank you very much for making available not only one, but two scholarships available for the Making Things Happen 2013 conference! I had a spectacular year in 2012 and have many things to be thankful for. I married by best friend at the beginning of the year and took the leap of faith and started Papeleria towards the end. Papeleria is a design studio focused on creating a unique and lovely invitation for any one of life’s wonderful events. I have always had a passion and love for everything paper and it’s a blessing that I can do what I love every day.

My father always told my sisters and I “it’s all about choices”, I bet I heard that at least once a week growing up. It annoyed me at the time but I would not be the person I am today without his advice. It was my choice to take the risk and start my own small business and now it’s up to me to reach new heights and set new goals for Papeleria. I also admire the late Steve Jobs for saying “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle…” I could not paint a better picture of what my life is today, I absolutely, hands-down LOVE what I do.

I would be so grateful to receive a scholarship to MTH 2013 and cherish every minute there. I would be able to apply everything I learned not only to the day-to-day aspects of Papeleria but also looking to the future. You will help me set goals and create a path for the future. I am proud of where I am now and can’t wait to build the future of Papeleria with the help and inspiration of Making Things Happen 2013! I have a feel that 2013 will be just as good as 2012! Thank you again for this opportunity!!

This year I want to take my wedding planning business to the next level and focus on balancing my work and family life. I love what I do, and my business has grown already this year, but I would like to get it to the point where once we have kids I can successfully run the business, while staying home with our children. I feel like God has been laying it on my heart that this is how I’m going to be able to accomplish both of those things. I have already been so inspired by all of you ladies, I just know that MTH will help me to grow closer to my goals. Lara, I have been following your goal setting series and I can already tell the different it has made in my life. I am working towards continuing that throughout the year, and would love to attend MTH.

Reviewing my goal settings for February and my focus is still the same: I want to make sure that God’s Will for my life happens. Bold Faith! There are so many specific areas that fit under that, but it will take bold and active faith to accomplish it. I want to make ME happen this year. I’m transitioning to an empty nester after 18 years. It’s time to dream again! Where do I start? MTH would help me to make the transition from sacrifice of self to reacquainting myself with “ME”! As a single mom these areas are often put on the shelf. I am on a path to personal growth and I believe greatness. I have faith that if I am randomly chosen for this event it is because it is the way it is suppose to go. So my heart has rested for “each day has it’s own badness” and worrying will not help me. I am already grateful in my heart and filled with joy and appreciation just knowing that you ladies are going to do this and inspire countless people by your friendship and journey. God bless for sharing cause I needed a helping hand over the past month and it was like you reached out and gave me yours. I know that “mysterious ways” are a part of life if you let them be. I have sent out my smoke signal in to the universe and shall wait and see. Thank you.

I’m a little slow to this but more than ever I want to make big things happen this year! I want to live life to it’s fullest…loving my two precious boys and impacting this generation with resources to help build a lasting marriage and technology that helps the wedding industry. Would love to attend MTH2013.

Lara, Emily, Gina (and all of you lovely people!): In 2013 I want to continue to be brave. I want to reach out and ask people for help in endeavors that I can’t accomplish myself. I want to write two books (one poetry, one novel), and in order to accomplish this I have taken up the habit of writing often (3-4 times a week), want to attend writing meetings to have my work critiqued by others, and even further down the line meet with an editor and publish my work. I want to push myself to be more authentic by honing my listening skills and facilitating even more positive interactions with people. I want to do this to strengthen my personal relationships even further and I believe it would help me in my future career as a counselor. I want to connect with professionals in my field of study (counseling) and within my specialty (expressive arts), and I will do that by reaching out to them in person and email to form connections. I want to become physically stronger by finding and sticking with workouts that challenge my body. My health is especially important to me because I know that it’s the simple things like walking without assistance are things we easily take for granted. I want to continue to find ways to use my gifts to bless others, like mailing encouraging letters to people. Finally, I want to continue to grow in my relationship with God, to love him, hear him, and be obedient to what he asks. This relationship has given me the greatest joy, comfort, and freedom. Taking the time to invest in it makes each day a success.

Attending this conference would mean a lot to me because I believe that it could play a key part in my year to illuminate my purpose and imagining what my future could look like. I know I have a purpose to live out and believe that surrounding myself with men and women, willing to be honest and vulnerable, striving towards their purpose would be an incredible inspiration to me and an exercise in being brave, something that I could not afford to miss without trying.

I want to make my dreams happen. My dream is to create a balance between my incredible family and the dream job I’m creating (the event design company I launched last month). My dream is to stop planning every detail out and put into action all the ideas that fire me up and keep me up at night. I am confident that the incredible ladies involved with MTH will give me the tools and push in the right direction to make it happen.

Ever since I came across MTH a week ago the words “making things happen” have been top of mind and have become a mantra for me. There is so much I want to make happen in 2013 – including growing my blog, growing my etsy shop, and finding a way to start doing custom wedding decor. I want to find ways to spend more time with my friends and family (most live a few hours away). I want to take advantage of all the amazing opportunities that exist in NYC and have more quality time with my husband. I have found in this week alone I have done a lot to help myself achieve these goals…and that’s just from finding out about this event and adopting this little mantra. I can’t wait to experience the impact of actually attending MTH and am so excited to be part of it this March!

  246. Mackenzie Kern on February 11, 2013 at 10:58 pm

I read this quote from Mary Marantz today and it sums up so much of what I want in 2013…
“Chasing these dreams is not really something that we owe ourselves, but something that we owe the world.”
This year I want to be so fully overflowing with Christ that I chase my dreams with reckless abandon. I want to be confident in my gifts and talents not because of anything I have done, but because I am called to glorify Christ and serve others with what I have been given… I tried to think over the past few days about what I want selfishly, in my own flesh, and what God is calling me to. As I was praying over it, the thing that kept coming back to me is the fact that I am called to glorify Christ through every aspect of my business and I want that so desperately for this year…
I also want to expand and successfully move my photography and jewelry business and life from Eastern North Carolina to Minneapolis, Minnesota. This will be my 7th move in my almost 17 years of life. I have been so fully broken through all of the change… I have to lay down MY plans (which is unbelievably hard when you’re the child who weekly color codes her closet and has been planning her monthly business budget since first starting my businesses at 13) and MY desires, and though I know that Gods plans are so much harder than what I would choose, I know living in His will is more sweet and incredible than what I plan in my flesh. After being in North Caroline for 5 years, I am saddened by the change but it’s also a reminder that change is a wonderful thing… Sometimes we need to be broken and pruned by Christ so that we first and foremost step back and remember why we are truly here and secondly so we can grow more in every aspect of life. Things are changing and though I cannot control the fact that I am moving, I can use every opportunity to make things happen in the world around me. So many of the plans I had for growth in business and life have changed because of our move. Things are moving on and I can choose to watch the train go bye and find solace in my own self pity or I can jump on that train, make a difference in this world, and become a leader of my generation….. I choose the latter…. This year I will choose, not in spite of but because of all the change, to make things happen!

I am so sorry for that novel of an explanation, but it’s impossible to explain what I want out of 365 days in any other way! I cannot even begin to tell you all how much I would adore the opportunity to learn and grow my businesses at the workshop. I want to solidify my branding and voice, I want change because I never want to settle for what is easy, and I want to come alive, because if I only have this one life to live, I want to make it not just good but fantastically amazing! I want to be so full of my Savior that I make a difference through my businesses.
I would love nothing more than to spend two days learning, growing, and becoming more passionate about my art with other amazing entrepreneurs. Thank you all so much for this incredible opportunity and for challenging me to think about what I want to make happen this year!

I waited until the last hour to do this because it is so hard for me to put into words what I want to make happen in 2013. It is hard because “all I want is everything”. 🙂 I know it wont always be easy, fun or “perfect”. But I don’t believe in settling. I believe in love. I believe in CREATING your dream job. I believe in whole hearted happiness. And I believe anyone can have it all! With passion, perseverance, dedication, ambition and most of all, FAITH. I know that I am great at some things that don’t make me happy. And I am good at some things that make me happy. 2013 is all about finding the balance. Pursuing a career (or creating a career) that I am not just great at, but one that makes me happy and proud. I want to inspire others to do the same and not to give up on their big dreams. I want to attend the Making Things Happen Conference because sometimes perseverance takes direction. I need direction. The speakers of MTH are mentors of mine and I would love to hear each and every tip, trick and story. I would love to meet new people and make connections. I know that I will eventually create my dream job and the MTH conference will be worth every second of my time and attention. Please consider me for a scholarship! {I want to make IT ALL happen in 2013} xo

I am a stay at home mom of 15 months! i am loving this journey but i also have lots of creative outlets (photography, sewing, monogramming, blogging and crocheting). I would LOVE to start some type of business. My dream is to stay at home with my children but also have a business working for myself. I have so many passions – I just need focus and clarity about what to pursue as a business and what to just piddle and enjoy without feeling the need to turn it into a business. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to win this! Agggh, I’m freaking out just thinking about it!

So, I know the deadline has past already, but I figured I would put it all out there anyways. When I was a freshman in college I discovered iloveswmag.com and instantly bookmarked it. Fast forward four years later, I was in my senior year of college and I somehow stumbled back through my old bookmarks. The website then lead me to Lara, Emily, and Gina. I spent a little while crying over one of Lara’s blog posts about the depression she experienced after Grace was born. I sent Lara an email because there were certain things within that post that I related to so strongly at the time. Like wanting to please everyone and having a hard time saying no(still working on it). It was then that I became an avid follower of you, emily, gina, amber, nancy, lindsay and many of the different creatives associated with you. I took my first big step last month and attended the webinar. I so strongly want to attend the conference, but at this point on my life working for a venue that is brand new and starting from bottom, I cannot financial afford it. I honestly thought about writing family members and asking for a donation, but I thought that would be silly. I thought, they wouldn’t understand what this is and how badly I want it.

I am a 23 year old going on 30. I am the Marketing and Event planner for a barn venue in Georgia. I have a lot of big dreams, but ultimately circumstances determine my path at such a young age. Money is obviously an issue when it comes to making things happen. I have design talent, I have a fierce creative streak, and I downright wanna love what I do and make my own schedule. I wanna make so many things happen, I wanna blog more, I wanna design printables, I wanna learn awesome calligraphy skills like Lindsay, I wanna design wedding stationary like Val, and I wanna do it all in a way that glorifies God.

He gave me this talent no doubt and now I am just itching to figure out how to use it and make it happen. I feel a bit inexperienced and maybe that is just fear talking, but regardless this is a glimpse of who I am and where I am.

Oh and my Instagram picture would totally make the cut for the scholarship, but darn me for not seeing this sooner. Timing is an important thing though so maybe the timing is all off. Who knows. Regardless. Check out my instagram picture I tagged y’all in for a good laugh. I still can’t believe I posted it, but hey, you said get creative. 😉
